Museo dell'Ara Pacis - Exterior
Right Side - facing the Mausoleo di Augusto
The right side of the museum runs closely beside the Via di Ripetta, the farthest back section of the building running directly into the cobblestones with no sidewalk. Beside the museum, the street is now normally closed to vehicles, creating a pedestrian walkway and, toward the front of the museum, a protected area onto which the grand staircase spills. The current project for the Piazza Augusto Imperatore is designed to connect this level to a green terrace being consturcted around the Mausoleum di Augusto.

The Res Gestae wall, seen in the distance, indicates the height of the base along the entire side of the 1938 pavilion. This base also bent around the two ends of the pavilion (cf. photo at right). The oppressive size of this base has been significantly allieviated in the design of the new museum.

the right side.
The front facade of this 1938 pavilion was only a few feet in front of the ceremonial front (original west front) of the Ara Pacis.
The area with stairs and parked cars in this photo is now covered by the entrance building of the 2006 museum. The area now covered by Meier's flowing staircase (as in photo at left) is behind the photographer in this 1986 photo.
