Museo dell'Ara Pacis - Exterior
The Wall - along the Lungotevere in Augusta
Most marble walls inside and outside the museum are surfaced with travertine slabs, individually mounted to concrete walls. These are cleft-cut on the public faces, smoothly cut on the backs and along all edges. The travertine is smoothed on top and carefully mitered at the corners. This same material and exact design were first used by Meier for the J.Paul Getty Center, Los Angeles, but seems even more appropriate for the Ara Pacis Museum in Rome.
