Functionally the two vaulted passageways led only to a narrow
walkway behind.

The inner surfaces of the passageway are entirely plain, breaking the otherwise continous frieze and base molding; the only exception being the molding at the springing of the arch, which is continued on the sides of the passageway.

Wide angle photographs (such
as this) of the north transverse vaulted passageway are misleading,
suggesting curvature, whereas these suffits are almost
perfectly straight.
