Dear Reed Community,

We write to thank you for the care and compassion you have shown one another as our community grieves the loss of one of our students, Arav Hanspal. We encourage you to continue to support each other in the coming weeks, and to be in touch with Student Life, Residence Life, and Arav’s major department, Psychology, in particular as the semester continues.

We are also writing to update you on the College’s plan for the memorial that has existed in the ODB Sallyport over the past week. After consulting Arav’s family and with consideration of the needs of our community, we will hold space in Gray Lounge tomorrow, Friday, October 27, from 1-6 p.m. as a way to recognize the memorial while collecting the items and notes that community members have contributed to deliver to Arav’s family. Student Life and HCC staff will be available in the space.

On Friday, Student Life will gather the items from the Sallyport and relocate them to Gray Lounge. There will also be a book for community members who wish to write messages of condolence to the family. Following the closing of this space at 6 p.m., the items will be gathered by Student Life. Additionally, Student Life will make the book available in the weeks that follow, in Eliot 218, for those who wish to contribute but are unable to go to Gray Lounge this Friday. We will coordinate with the family to deliver these items and messages to them.

As the Reed community continues to grieve, we want to remind you of the various resources available to help students, staff, and faculty.

Reed students can call the Reed Counseling Line at 866-432-1224. This service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Reed students also can access services through HCC's partnership with Uwill for mental health and wellness solutions.

Reed students can schedule a counseling session with a clinician through the HCC by contacting the HCC at 503-777-7281. HCC counselors are also available for same-day urgent or emergent mental health needs.

The Portland-based Dougy Center provides help for individuals aged 18 to 25 who are grieving a death. The center is located at 3909 SE 52nd Ave; the center’s telephone number is 503-775-5683.

Faculty and staff may access grief counseling services 24 hours a day, seven days a week, through the college’s employee assistance plan (EAP). Call Canopy EAP at 800-433-2320.
