Subject: Standing Firm in Our Mission and Principles

February 27, 2025

Dear Reed College Community,

A recent “Dear Colleague” letter from the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights has sparked discussions across higher education regarding compliance with federal law and the future of institutional commitments to diversity, equity, and inclusion. While the letter has sown confusion and caused concern for many throughout the national higher education community, Reed College’s commitments remain clear.

Reed has always been, and will always be, a place where rigorous intellectual inquiry flourishes alongside a deep commitment to diversity and the free exchange of ideas. These are not competing principles—they are fundamental to who we are and essential to our identity. As we move forward, we do so with unwavering resolve to uphold our mission and operating principles, affirming the dignity and worth of every member of our community.

We remain dedicated to fostering an academic environment that brings together individuals from diverse backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives and allows every member of the Reed community to find a sense of belonging on campus. The strength of our intellectual tradition depends on the richness of voices engaged in meaningful dialogue, and we will continue to ensure that our policies and practices reflect this enduring commitment.

Reed does not waver in the face of shifting political tides. We remain steadfast in our responsibility to cultivate an educational space where all students, faculty, and staff can participate fully and authentically. We will always operate with integrity, ensuring that Reed remains a model of both academic excellence and inclusivity. Reed College stands firmly in alignment with both federal law and our shared community values.

This moment in time is a powerful reminder of why institutions like ours matter. We stand not only for the pursuit of knowledge but also for the principles that make that pursuit meaningful. We will move forward with clarity, with confidence, and with an unrelenting commitment to who we are.

Sincerely,

Audrey
