Subject: Introducing the Reed Climate Change Research and Education Fund

February 5, 2021

Dear students, faculty, and staff,

I am delighted to share that we are launching a new student opportunity, the Climate Change Research and Education Fund. This fund has been made possible thanks to the generosity of the Henner Family. The family shared with me that they are establishing this fund because of the Reed community’s demonstrated interest in and commitment to issues of climate change.

The Climate Change Research and Education Fund will support student-faculty research, student nonprofit internships, and career-advancement funding that will enable students to attend climate change conferences and present research posters. In a model similar to the Social Justice Research and Education Fund, the research and internship opportunities can take place at Reed or at other higher education institutions and nonprofits.

For the summer of 2021, funding will support two student opportunities. Going forward, we anticipate awarding up to four opportunities as well as providing support for professional development pursuits, travel, conferences, and costs related to student-led projects. The Center for Life Beyond Reed will run the application and awarding process in coordination with campus partners to ensure accessibility to all students and coordinated efforts. The application process will run from February 15 through March 31.

I am grateful this fund will support ongoing efforts to support student interest in research and work focused on climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies. We know these strategies will require advances in technology, governmental policy, and urban planning. It gives me great hope to know Reedies are and will continue to be at the forefront of these advances.

If you have questions regarding this or any fellowship and award opportunities, I encourage you to contact clbrfellowships@reed.edu.

All my best,

Audrey
