What has been a bright spot for you this week at work?

Providing truly meaningful help to a student who is in a significantly difficult position. It was a wonderful reminder of what an honor it is to be in this role.

What was the last thing you did that you were proud of?

Well, I recently finished my doctorate which I'm very proud of. But what I'm actually MORE proud of is that I promised myself I'd learn Spanish when I was done and, last week, I downloaded Duolingo! I'm very proud of following through on something I said I would do when I had more time. I was afraid I'd fall into the trap of doing nothing because, as John Mulaney said, "It is one-hundred percent easier not to do things than to do them."

What is your favorite place on campus?

Favorite place on campus so far is the sports center. It's been cool participating in some of the classes being offered (combination of yoga, pilates, and strength/conditioning classes), meeting other staff and faculty member attendees, and getting a mid-day energy and endorphin boost. I've also started playing basketball with a group on Fridays over the lunch hour, which has been a blast. I played basketball in college and it's one of my favorite ways to blow off steam and get out of my head. When I left my last job, working as a legal investigator for an asbestos litigation law firm where I spent several days a week traveling, I promised myself I'd get back into playing basketball a little more regularly so it's nice to be able to fit a weekly game in and especially in Reed’s gym (easily the most beautiful gym I've ever played in).

What is something you're looking forward to?

My husband and I are traveling to Japan in late May of next year for a couple weeks as a belated honeymoon after canceling our trip in 2022 due to Covid. We're just getting started sort of mapping the route. I have been trying to learn more about Japanese history and am enjoying literature written by Japanese author Haruki Murakami and Japanese-American-Canadian author Ruth Ozeki. Next on the list is The Memory Police by Yōko Ogawa. I would be eager to connect with Reed community members who are from Japan or have spent time in Japan to gather recommendations for places to visit and things to do while we are there.
