Reed College is committed to fostering a safe work environment and supporting hiring managers in making informed decisions. Starting in January 2025, Reed will implement pre-employment background checks for all new hires. This process is not entirely new, as background checks have long been required for positions in Community Safety and the Business Office for a number of years.
The background check requirement will now extend to all new staff hires as a condition of employment. In collaboration with the Dean of the Faculty Office and in consultation with CAT, the background check requirement will extend to faculty starting in Fall 2025. These checks will be conducted after a candidate is selected and has accepted the job offer. Any findings will be reviewed in relation to the job’s responsibilities and the safety considerations of the Reed community.
A new website outlining the Background Screening process and requirements will go live on December 20. It will be accessible under Human Resources → Policies and Procedures → Background Screening Process and will include FAQs for reference. In addition, any active job posting will be updated with the following sentence “All offers of employment are contingent upon successful completion of a background check.”
