Travel and Hotels

Travel

If you have not yet booked your flight to Portland, please do so, and save the receipts: we will be able to reimburse you for your flight after the fact. The Portland Airport is lovely and easy to understand. The Trimet MAX Red Line train runs from the airport to downtown every fifteen minutes. There are also, of course, taxis available and a number of rental car businesses at the airport should you want to secure your own transportation for the weekend.

The workshop will provide van transportation to campus and back from the hotels downtown Friday and Saturday mornings and evenings. If you choose to rent a car or a bicycle for transportation from downtown, use the maps below to guide you. Reed College is located in Southeast Portland, in the Eastmoreland neighborhood.

Free visitor parking is available in Reed’s north, east, and west parking lots. No permit is required. See map of the Reed campus for locations.

Hotels

We have secured a block of rooms at the Benson Hotel in downtown Portland for Thursday night Oct 13 through Sunday morning Oct 16. Please call 503-228-2000 and tell them you are with the REED COLLEGE event.

We have also secured a small number of rooms at the ACE Hotel in downtown Portland. The ACE has very few rooms for us Thursday night, but many more available Friday and Saturday nights, in case you are coming in Friday morning (or simply want to stay at an ACE hotel). Please call 503-228-2277 and tell them you are with the REED COLLEGE event.

Rates for both of these hotels are $125 to $129 a night; 15 such rooms have been budgeted into the cost of the workshop, so all of you coming from Mellon 23 schools are covered. For those of you coming in from non-Mellon 23 colleges, in case you need to watch your accommodations budget, we have also secured two rooms in the Parker House on the Reed College campus. These rooms are $55/night. Please contact Colby Westhead at Reed College if you are interested: 503-788-6669. The Parker House is also our designated meeting space for Friday October 14 (in the Socrates Room, of course).
