Every student should have a laptop with a currently supported operating system, capable of running Microsoft Office (free for Reed students), modern web browsers, and Zoom. A majority of the Reed community chooses to use Apple computers, but Windows and Linux systems will also work.
The following Mac or Windows specifications should be sufficient for most students:
Minimumlaptop specs:
macOS 13 (Ventura) or later
Windows 10
8GB RAM
256GB SSD
Recommendedlaptop specs:
macOS 14 (Sonoma) or later
Windows 11 or newer
16GB RAM
512GB SSD or greater
Additional accessories may be beneficial:
Webcam
iPad with stylus
External keyboard
Mouse
Headphones
20” or 24” external monitor
Extended warranty (including accidental damage and spill coverage)
We recommend a minimum of 16GB memory. The amount of storage will vary by usage. Consider upgrading to 512GB storage (or more) if you anticipate storing large media files such as photos and videos.
