Heritage Programming Committee
Mission Statement
The Heritage Programming Committee supports community-led initiatives that fosters meaningful engagement with the diverse identities of our campus, and deepens a collective appreciation for our community’s cultural wealth.
History
In the Heritage Committee’s inaugural year, members of the committee engaged deeply to build a sustainable infrastructure that not only celebrates heritage months, but also institutionalized cultural awareness across the campus. Through a comprehensive approach that involved intentional data gathering, community engagement, and collaboration with both internal and eternal stakeholders, the committee coordinated two campus wide event in the 2023-2024 Academic Year: the Reed College Pride Party, and the Juneteenth Gathering.
As we reflect on the work over the year, the committee remains committed to the ongoing dialogue necessary to evolve and refine the work. As part of this commitment to continuous improvement, the committee has established a mission statement that is rooted in the Office for Institutional Diversity Mission statement of "fostering the condition for equitable success for all students, co-creating an environment where all are valued, respected, and empowered".
Heritage Programming Grant
Heritage Programming Grant Application
In alignment with the committee's mission statement, the Heritage Programming Committee has developed a grant initiative that will emphasize our mission of fostering community-driven projects. This evolution from an event-coordinating committee to a grant reviewing committee will support a broader range of cultural and heritage ideas. The Heritage Programming Grant (HPG) was established in the fall of 2024. The following guidelines were created to facilitate meaningful collaboration between your project and the Heritage Programming Committee.
Guidelines
Proposals are eligible for funding approval up to $500.00 to support projects that align with the Heritage Programming Committee's mission. To facilitate meaningful collaboration between your project and our committee, the HPG operates under clear guidelines to ensure transparency, accountability, and responsible use of our campus resources. Click here to read our guidelines and rubric.
Institutional Discretion
The Heritage Programming Committee Grant is funded entirely out of the Office for Institutional Diversity's operating budget. The division holds full discretion and authority regarding annual funding allocation. All aspects of the grant process (which includes but is not limited to the fund’s eligibility criteria, evaluation procedures, funding allocation, funding utilization, progress monitoring, impact assessment, and reporting of funds) were drafted in collaboration between the Heritage Programming Committee (HPC) alongside the Office for Institutional Diversity.
The Heritage Programming Committee is committed to ensuring responsible stewardship of financial resources. The Heritage Grant must be used solely for the purposes outlined in the proposal. Any deviation from the proposed budget must be approved by the Heritage Committee in advance.
Reporting Requirements
In alignment with grant writing best practices, the Heritage Committee will report on all funded projects on the HPC website, and on the Office for Institutional Diversity Annual Report. This report will include each awarded project’s project description, awarded amount, project objectives, and project outcomes. To facilitate our committee’s commitment to transparency and accountability, all recipients of the Heritage Grant are required to provide a final report on the project’s outcomes and impact. This report will include a post-event summary addressing the project's progress towards the outcomes and objectives as outlined in the proposal.
Publicity
The Heritage Month Committee and the Office for Institutional Diversity may publicize information about the funded project to highlight impact and promote awareness. Recipients are expected to acknowledge the Heritage Month Committee as appropriate in project-related communications.
Future Consideration
Awarded projects are encouraged to consider alternative funding sources to support ongoing and future iterations of the project.
