Pay and Time Off Due to Inclement Weather
Eligibility
All regular (non temporary) staff and on-call staff who are called in to work.
Who must work on campus during a campus closure due to inclement weather?
During a campus closure, supervisors will determine which employees are required to work on campus and for how long. Who is required to come to work on campus depends on the nature of the inclement weather, the amount of preparation accomplished before the closure, events scheduled on campus that day, and other factors. Reed supervisors and department directors will make every effort to minimize the number of staff required to work on campus during a closure.
Supervisors are directed to notify each staff member as far in advance as practical whether they are expected to report to work on campus during a closure. Employees working overnight shifts before a closure may be required to stay late the next morning. Employees should speak with their supervisors ahead of time to determine whether their position might be expected to work on campus during a closure.
Staff who are able to work from home while campus is closed are expected to do so.
Pay during a campus closure due to inclement weather
Hourly employees required to work on campus during an inclement weather closure are compensated at a rate twice their regular hourly wage for four hours or all hours worked during a closure, whichever is greater.
Salaried employees required to work on campus during a closure do not receive extra pay because they receive the same salary irrespective of the number of hours worked.
During campus closure, hourly or salaried staff who work from home do not receive extra pay.
Each time campus closes, specific closing and opening times are announced. It might be the case that the campus is closed during day shift but reopens for swing or night shift.
Timecards
Hourly and salaried employees who do not work due to the campus closure will mark their scheduled but unworked hours as “Weather Closure” on their timecard.
Hourly employees who are required to work on campus during the closure will mark those hours as “Weather Closure Worked On-site” on their timecard and receive double time for those hours.
What if campus is not closed, but I cannot come to work due to weather conditions near my home?
As with other emergencies, if someone can not work due to weather conditions near their home, they will notify their supervisor as far in advance as possible and mark the unworked hours as vacation on their timecard.
