Firearms

Section I. Terms
A. For the purposes of the policy, a firearm is a weapon, by whatever name known, which is designed to expel a projectile by the action of powder (ORS 166.210). Firearms include rifles, shotguns, handguns, air guns, and gas-powered guns, all ammunition or hand-loading equipment and supplies for the same.
B. Possession includes, but is not limited to, storage in residential facilities, academic or administrative offices, lockers, desks, personal bags, holsters or personal vehicles parked on Reed College property. Possession also includes having a firearm on one’s person.
Section II. Policy
A. No staff, faculty, students, guests or others may possess or use a firearm on Reed College owned or controlled properties, or during official Reed activities.
B. Exceptions to this policy include individuals licensed to carry firearms as part of their official occupational duty or responsibility on campus, such as law enforcement officers and armed guards. Community Safety Officers may at times be required to temporarily possess firearms in the process of confiscating and securing non-sanctioned firearms.
C. The Director of Community Safety (or designee) may determine further exceptions to this policy. Exceptions may be granted to specific persons, activities or locations. Exceptions shall be reviewed and approved by the Director’s immediate supervisor or a Vice President of the College.
D. Firearms or simulated firearms used for a college-sanctioned activity may be stored at the Sports Center by pre-arrangement with the Director of Athletics, Fitness and Outdoor Programs and the Director of Community Safety.
E. Failure on the part of any member of the Reed community to adhere to the College’s firearms policy and/or to cooperate in an investigation of alleged violation of said policy constitutes grounds for a disciplinary proceeding via the appropriate body (i.e. Judicial Board for students, Human Resources for staff, grievance proceedings for faculty).
F. The Director of Community Safety (or designee) is responsible for overseeing implementation of all provisions of this policy and may develop and implement guidelines necessary to ensure effective implementation of the policy. Implementation guidelines shall be reviewed and approved by the Director’s immediate supervisor or a Vice President of the College.
Anyone who observes or has knowledge of someone violating this policy should immediately report the incident to Community Safety at 503-788-6666.
