Declaration of major

Students must declare a major once they have earned 16 units. Students who have completed 16 units or who are enrolled in units, the completion of which will result in their completion of 16 units, will not be allowed to register for subsequent semesters until they declare the major. Students will be admitted to junior standing once they have earned 13 Reed units and have declared a major. Declaration of major forms  are available in the registrar’s office and must be signed by a faculty member in the major field to indicate that the curricular expectations of majoring in that field have been explained and discussed with the student.

On the declaration of major form, students should indicate which courses they plan to use to fulfill their general distribution, major, and division requirements and how they plan to complete the senior year and physical education requirements.

After declaring a major, a student should consult the department website which typically contains useful information about the junior qualifying exam, thesis regulations, and other requirements.
