Advanced placement and advanced standing

Credit is allowed on the basis of some College Entrance Examination Board Advanced Placement (AP) examinations, and some International Baccalaureate (IB) examinations, provided the appropriate academic department at Reed has reviewed and approved the examination. Scores of four or five normally are required to receive credit for AP exams, and a score of five or higher is required for IB. Credit for AP and IB tests will apply as transfer credit towards the 30 units required for graduation but cannot be used to meet the college’s distribution or division requirements. Students receiving AP or IB credit are expected to take a normal course load for their class level (3–4 units per semester). The college may grant credit for college courses taken before enrollment at Reed, if those courses were not applied to the high school degree. Such courses must represent regular college work and should not be courses designed for high school students. They normally are taken in addition to a full high school program.

First-year students who appear adequately prepared based on an evaluation by the appropriate department may be allowed to enroll in advanced courses.
