Education and Employment

I got my B.A. from Oxford University, U.K., in 1990 (a “congratulatory” first class in both classical literature and philosophy), and my Ph.D., which focused on classical literature, from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia in 1994.

I was an Assistant Professor at Wellesley College, near Boston, for the year after that (1994-95). I was an Assistant Professor at Reed from 1995 until I earned tenure in 2001; in 2005 I was named to the Walter Mintz Chair of Classics, and in 2008 I was appointed to Full Professor. I was on leave for the academic year 2008-09, in order to serve as the Professor-in-Charge of the Intercollegiate center for Classical Studies program in Catania, Sicily.
