Tips to Keep Your Keys Secure
Losing your keys is not only an inconvenience for you, but a potential security and safety risk to the campus. The Facilities Services team asks that you adhere to the following best practices for key security.
- Never loan your keys to anyone including friends or coworkers.
- Keep your keys tethered to you. We recommend using either a lanyard, retractable belt clip, or a carabiner attached to a belt loop.
- Do not add identifiers to your keys. If you misplace your keys, identifiers increase the likelihood they can be used by unauthorized parties. Identifiers include “Reed College” lanyards and keychains as well as your ID/swipe card.
- Never leave your keys in your car.
- Only leave campus with the keys you will need to gain access to your office or workspace. All other keys should remain on campus. Please make sure keys are kept locked in their intended secure location (i.e. lockbox or locked desk drawer).
- Always store your keys in the same secure location. This will help you recognize if they are missing.
- If you misplace your keys, immediately notify your supervisor and Facilities Services.
- Please remember that your ID/swipe card is just another key. If lost or stolen, immediately contact OneCard or Community Safety.
