Chemistry

Visiting Assistant Professor of Chemistry

The Chemistry Department invites applications for two year-long 1.0 FTE Visiting Assistant Professor Faculty Positions: one in General Chemistry and one in Organic Chemistry, starting August 2025. We seek candidates who are enthusiastic about undergraduate education to teach in our General Chemistry sequence, CHEM 101 in the Fall semester and CHEM 102 in the Spring semester. Likewise, we seek enthusiastic candidates to teach in our Organic Chemistry sequence, CHEM 201 in the Fall semester and CHEM 202 in the Spring semester. Both of these year-long sequences include a laboratory component, and teaching duties may also include advising senior thesis students in year-long research projects. Candidates should indicate whether they would like to be considered for either or both positions. A Ph.D. is required at the time of appointment; postdoctoral or teaching experience is preferred but not required.

The Chemistry Department has excellent resources for innovative teaching and research, including dedicated research lab space, a new 400 MHz multinuclear NMR, GC-MS, LC-MS, X-ray diffraction, and ICP-MS instruments, a laser laboratory, and a TRIGA nuclear reactor research facility (https://www.reed.edu/chemistry/instrumentation.html).

The application, submitted via Interfolio (http://apply.interfolio.com/162571), consists of a Curriculum Vitae, a Cover Letter (~1 page) which details your specific interest in a given position, a Teaching Statement (~2 pages) which proposes your plans for an inclusive pedagogical program, contact information for three references, and a brief Research Statement (~2 pages) which describes how you might engage undergraduate scholars in year-long thesis projects. In your materials, we encourage you to address Reed’s commitment to a diverse, antiracist, and inclusive community as outlined in our institutional values (https://www.reed.edu/institutional_diversity/diversity-statement.html). We will begin reviewing applications beginning March 1, 2025 and until the positions are filled.

We welcome diverse candidates who are enthusiastic about inclusively teaching general or organic chemistry; please contact search chair Dr. Kelly N. Chacón (kchacon@reed.edu) (they/them/elle) if you have any questions that would increase transparency around the above criteria.

Deadline: application review begins March 1, 2025
