Comprised of four linked duets, each created by a different choreographer, Exquisite Corpse unfolds as a single continuous piece. Each choreographer adapted strategies from Surrealist art-making practices, in which evocative materials are juxtaposed in startling ways. Like images in a Surrealist painting, each duet appears as a transformation of the one before, creating not a narrative, but a mystery. Conceived and performed by just two dancers, Carla Mann and Jim McGinn, Exquisite Corpse elucidates the distinct artistic voices of some of the region’s most stellar choreographers: Mary Sheldon Scott of Scott/Powell Performance; Rachel Tess and Stephan Laks of Rumpus Room Dance; Tahni Holt; and collaborators Mann and McGinn. Exquisite Corpse is generously supported by the Regional Art and Culture Council (RACC) and by the Reed College Faculty Summer Scholarship Fund and includes original music by composers Heather Perkins and Jarrad Powell as well as video animation by John Bacone.
