Date: 2023 12 04
Time: 02:09
Description: Exclusion
Location: Eliot Hall

Notes: A CSO on patrol encountered an unknown individual sleeping in a locked office in Eliot Hall. The CSO confirmed that the office should have been unoccupied at that time and requested the individual leave. The CSO waited while the individual packed up their belongings. After providing a description of the individual to Dispatch, the CSO confirmed that the individual was a prior Reed employee. The CSO escorted the former employee off of campus, and at one point the former employee became verbally aggressive, threatening to physically harm the CSO. The former employee has been formally excluded based on this and prior interactions.

Case #: 230453
Date: 2023 12 05
Time: 01:20
Description: Burglary
Location: McKinley

Notes: A CSO responded to a theft report at McKinley residence hall. The CSO met with a student who stated that they had encountered two unknown individuals stealing bicycles from inside McKinley. The unidentified individuals fled on the stolen bikes. The student confirmed that they owned one of the bikes that had been stolen, but declined to file a report with Community Safety or the police at that time. When checking the doors to the building, the CSO observed that the door to the laundry room did not latch correctly, allowing for unauthorized access to the residence hall. An urgent work order has been placed with building services to fix the door latch.

Date: 2023 12 07
Time: 22:17
Description: Alcohol Violation
Location: The Grove

Notes: CSOs on patrol encountered a group of students with a large case of alcohol. When asked, only one student confirmed that they were of the legal drinking age. As the remaining students in the group were not yet of legal drinking age, and the quantity of alcohol was of a distributable amount, the CSO explained that they would need to confiscate the alcohol. The student stated that they understood and gave the case of alcohol to the CSO. The CSO took the alcohol back to 28 West for safekeeping.

Case #: 230462
Date: 2023 12 08
Time: 22:29
Description: Alcohol Violation
Location: Griffin/McKinley

Notes: A CSO responded to a report of an alcohol violation in the Griffin/McKinley common area. Upon arrival, the CSO encountered a group of students in the common room. The CSO also observed multiple bottles of alcohol on a table in the room. Multiple students left the area before the CSO was able to speak with them. The CSO observed one student attempting to leave with one of the bottles of alcohol. The CSO stopped the student, who gave the CSO the bottle and confirmed that they were not of legal drinking age. The CSO requested additional CSOs on the scene to assist in clean up and speaking with students on the scene. After CS spoke with the On-Call Area Coordinator and the On-Call Dean, it was decided that because of the large amount of distributable alcohol found, the confirmation that most of the students residing in the McKinley and Griffin residence halls are not of the legal drinking age, and that there had been music turned up too loud at that time, the party should be dispersed. The CSOs informed the remaining students that they needed to disperse for the evening, which they did. The CSOs then confiscated and disposed of all remaining alcohol found in the vicinity.

Case #: 230467
Date: 2023 12 10
Time: 02:19
Description: Accident
Location: Eliot Circle

Notes: A CSO on vehicle patrol near Eliot Circle observed a vehicle entering campus via Eliot Drive. As the vehicle was being driven at a high rate of speed, the CSO lowered their window and asked that the driver slow down. The driver stopped the vehicle parallel to the CSO vehicle and yelled a slur at the CSO. The CSO was able to observe that there were three occupants in the vehicle, all of whom were wearing full-face ski masks. The vehicle then continued northward on Eliot Drive, around Eliot Circle and then southbound on Eliot Drive. As the vehicle again approached where the CSO had parked the CS vehicle, the driver swerved the vehicle in a deliberate manner and struck the CS vehicle with their vehicle, in a side-long fashion, then continued to drive off of campus. The CSO observed that once off of campus, the driver stopped and exited the vehicle to look at any damage their vehicle had sustained in the encounter, then the driver re-entered the vehicle and drove away. The CSO stated at the time that to the best of their knowledge, they had not been injured during the encounter. CS contacted Portland police to file the hit-and-run report. The CSO was able to provide the vehicle’s probable make and color, and the license plate information to the police for the report.

CS Survey Responses:

Every week Community Safety requests survey responses from those who've had interactions with a member of the Community Safety team. These responses are always collected anonymously with the option for the responder to leave contact information if they would like for a member of Community Safety management to contact them, and are used internally for departmental performance tracking. Community Safety has opted to publish these survey results for transparency and community accountability. *Names and pronouns mentioned in survey responses will be redacted to protect the privacy of individuals.

In addition to surveys sent directly to those who have interacted with Community Safety, the Reed community is always encouraged to independently complete the survey regarding Community Safety's performance.
You can take the survey here: CS Survey

Unlock Surpassed expectations Assistance with an unlock was requested in the SU for Sound Kollectiv equipment closets. I would much rather have keys provided by Residence Life than need to call CSO's, but the community safety officers always respond promptly and are happy to assist.

Medical Assist Met expectations Everyone was pretty good throughout the whole process. I appreciate the early suggestion to call an ambulance, if we had waited longer to call it might've gone poorly.
