The academic program of the Division of the Arts encourages scholarship, creativity, and performance. Studio courses and opportunities for performance and production provide intensive experience in the study and practice of the various artistic disciplines. Major programs are available in art, dance, music, and theatre. Students may also pursue interdisciplinary majors, including dance–theatre and literature–theatre.
Divisional Requirements
A major in any department of the division must satisfy these requirements:
- Satisfactory completion of two units of a second-year college foreign language course. Waiver of the division foreign language requirement will be granted in cases where the student has demonstrated proficiency equivalent to two years of college-level study. Two units of foreign language may be used toward satisfying the Group D requirement. Proficiency cannot be used to satisfy Group D.
- Approval of all independent study (481) courses by the division. The opportunity for independent study is ordinarily offered only to upper-class students who have done extensive work in the area.
