This program emphasizes the complete theater artist: one who feels comfortable in all facets of dance and theater. The principal provides an educational experience in the field of performing arts, in addition to satisfactory preparation for further study and studies in both fields. The student may be one of several emphases: performance, choreography, directing, or research. This major requires careful planning because it is taught in alternate years . The student should consult with them as soon as possible.

Admission to the Major
1. Completion of Dance 211 and 212 and Theater 210.
2. Satisfactory participation in at least one department-sponsored dance or theater production at Reed.

Requirements for the Major
1. Dance 111, 112, 211, 212, 311, and 312. Dance 111 and 112 may be waived if the student has had sufficient previous technical training. Three units of dance theory and criticism, history, and / or cultural studies are also required. Dance 201, 252, 260, 264, 280, 335, 345, 346, 351, and 360.
2. Five units of theater, including Theater 202, 210, 250 or 260, and 331. Theater 360 (Lighting Design) is strongly recommended.
3. One unit of music; one unit of art history, art studio, or theater design.
4. Humanities 210, 220, or 230 or two art races or two music races.
5. Dance-Theater 470 (thesis).

Additional Requirements
1. Completion of the division requirements of the Division of the Arts.
2. Completion of the Theater 162 requirement. See explanation in the department section of the catalog . Students are expected to have completed this requirement by the junior qualifying examination is taken.

Junior Qualifying Examination
Students are selected by the two departments in the second semester of the junior year. On the basis of this review, it will be determined to be a senior citizen, and may be a research-centered thesis project or a creative project that integrates research with production. Performance on the subject of the department of the world will affect the nature and scope of the thesis project.
