Natural History of the Canyon
Fungi
Large amounts of decaying wood in a moist environment with few disturbances make the Reed Canyon a perfect place for the growth of fungi. On a walk through the canyon in the fall, you'll probably see shelf fungi growing on the fallen trees and mushrooms popping up through the leaves on the forest floor. Sometimes there's even a stunning display of sulpher shelf (Laetiporus gilbertsonii).
Some of the mushrooms in the canyon are probably edible, but please don't collect them here. The canyon only has a very limited area and any picking would quickly eliminate the existing populations. Please leave the mushrooms in place so the rest of the Reed community can see them and enjoy them.
By the way, if you think you can identify the specimens in these photos, drop us a line.
