Bioinformatics and Computational Biology in the Liberal Arts
June 22-23, 2023
Reed College, Portland, Oregon
Quick Links: [Organizers] [Logistics] [Schedule]
This workshop is intended to bring computational scientists and molecular and cellular biologists together to discuss the curricular and research opportunities for bioinformatics and computational biology in the liberal arts. While biology and computer science are the main focus, faculty from chemistry, neuroscience, the social sciences, statistics, or math may also be interested in the workshop. In light of the pandemic's widespread disruptions, the workshop will reserve time for potential collaborative discussions related to faculty research.
This workshop is funded by the Alliance to Advance Liberal Arts Colleges (AALAC) and the National Science Foundation (Award Number 1750891). [Full AALAC Workshop Proposal]

Air Travel: Portland International Airport (PDX) is a 20-25 minute drive from Reed.
Lodging: Reed offers discounts on accommodations at local hotels. Reed is located in Southeast Portland - we recommend the sister hotels Evermore Guesthouse and Bluebird Guesthouse (https://www.divisioninns.com/), located a quick drive or bus ride to Reed and near tons of restaurants. AirBnB or other house rentals are available in the neighborhood.
Food: We anticipate offering coffee, breakfast, and snacks throughout the day and one workshop dinner at a nearby restaurant. Lunch will be on your own - there are nearby restaurants and the cafeteria is quite good. We may also have a low-key BBQ the evening before the workshop.
Reimbursement Instructions (submit receipts by July 15): Those flying to the meeting will be reimbursed up to $1200 and those driving to the meeting will be reimbursed up to $500 for expenses related to travel and lodging. This includes hotel/airBnB, flights on US air carriers, taxi/rideshare, car rental, and driving mileage. Email 2023-compbio-workshop@googlegroups.com if you have questions about what is reimbursable.
