Description
Hostelling International USA (HI USA), believes that travel changes you so you can change the world. They offer the Explore the World Travel Scholarship to help young Americans, regardless of financial need, travel experience, or location, to connect with other countries and cultures.
Recipients of the scholarship receive $2,000 to help finance an international trip that includes an educational or service component. A second version of the award, the First Passport Edition provides additional funds to an awardee who has never held a U.S. passport.
Eligibility
- Be 18–30 years old at the time you submit your application
- Be United States citizens, residents, or green card holders
- Be able to demonstrate financial need
- Have limited travel experience and limited travel resources
- Must plan to travel to an internation location with at least 5 overnight stays
- Travel must have an education or volunteer component

Selection Criteria
A scholarship committee of HI USA Volunteers will score and select awardees from completed, eligible applications based on the candidate's ability to:
- Present a compelling case for why/how they are a novice traveler
- Demonstrate financial need
- Convey a genuine interest in exploring the culture of the destination selected
- Convey a genuine interest in hostelling
