2024 Fellowships and Awards Results

Congratulations to Reed student and alumni recipients for national award competitions!

Reed College celebrates Nicole Chan '25 for being selected as a 2024 Goldwater Scholar. The Goldwater Scholarship Program, one of the oldest and most prestigious national scholarships in the natural sciences, engineering, and mathematics in the United States, seeks to identify, encourage, and financially support college sophomores and juniors who show exceptional promise of becoming this nation’s next generation of research leaders in these fields.

We're excited for our Fulbright U.S. Student Program finalists. The Fulbright Program is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government and is designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries. Recipients of Fulbright grants are selected on the basis of academic or professional achievement, as well as demonstrated leadership potential in their fields. These students are Fulbright Finalists for the 2024–2025 competition: Elizabeth Rollison '24 for an English Teaching Assistant grant in France, and Emilie Badener '24 for a Study/Research Grant in Germany.

The college also congratulates Aidan Mokalla '25 for being selected for a Critical Language Scholarship this summer. The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is an immersive summer opportunity for American college and university students to learn languages essential to America's engagement with the world.

Reed College is proud of Fabian Mintah '27, who has been awarded a 2024 Projects for Peace grant. His project is titled "Empowering Minds: Fostering Computer Literacy for School Children in Rural Ghana. 'FABI-TECH'" and will take place in Ghana. Projects for Peace is a global program that partners with educational institutions to identify and support young peacebuilders.

Congratulations to the Reed alumni who were offered awards or given Honorable Mentions in the National Science Foundation's Graduate Research Fellowship Program (NSF GRFP). This year's awardees are Alev Brigande '22 in neuroscience at Duke University, and Savannah Kathleen McBride '20 in biophysics at Columbia University. Honorable mention goes to Hannah McFadden '21 in chemistry at the University of California, Davis. The purpose of this program is to help ensure the quality, vitality, and diversity of the scientific and engineering workforce of the United States.

We'd also like to congratulate our Sperling Studentship recipient, Veronica Hua '24, who has received funding for a one year MPhil in English Studies at the University of Cambridge in England. The Sperling Studentship was endowed by John Sperling '48 and is available to fund at least one alum or recent graduate each year who is accepted to postgraduate study at King's College at the University of Cambridge in England.
