ARTIST’S STATEMENT
For the exhibition at the Laura Russo Gallery in 2000 I created photo lithographic prints of human stem cells tissue and the blastocyst. Stem cells are the first formations of our organs. Currently these cells are being harvested to regenerate tissue and cure illness. I was very attracted to images of stem cells because they look very much like a spinal column, which is in fact what our organs are aligned with.
The books, Cellular Tissue, have been taken from images of plant tissue, manipulated numerous times, printed and aligned to mimic the thin-section mounts used for magnification.
In the process of working with all these images I have manipulated the original photograph significantly. After scanning and adjusting each image I made large negatives which were exposed onto photo lithograph plates. I drew into the images on the lithograph plates, printed them, and drew into the final print extensively. My choice of each image was based on my interest in the graphic forms and the information they carried.
The prints were made at Mahaffey Fine Art in Portland. The books were constructed and bound while I was an artist in residence at the Women’s Studio Workshop in New York.
