Art 282 – Recycle and Re-Invention Spring 2020
“Whether Mr. Mutt with his own hands made the fountain or not has not importance. He CHOSE it!
He took an ordinary article of life, placed it so that its useful significance disappeared under the new title and point of view- created a new thought for that object.
As for Plumbing that is absurd. The only works of Art America has given are her Plumbing and her bridges.”
- Marcel Duchamp, Speaking about the Richard Mutt Case- “The Fountain”
In the second project you will to re-invent an object or a material or re-fabricate a form so that it has a new life. The work should have a metaphoric or poetic function. You may use any material for the project; the work should incorporate metal and or sewing skills we are covering in the course. Duchamp’s 1913 essay The Creative Act, which continues to influence contemporary art practice, will be discussed and used as a prompt to begin your work. We will focus on contemporary artists Nick Cave, Fred Wilson, Pedro Rays, Carla Fernández and the Brother Quay.
