Five Health and Wellbeing Tip for New Reedies

Dear Student,

It is my pleasure to reach out to you as the Associate Dean of Students for Health & Wellbeing in the Division of Student Life. I am looking forward to meeting you soon and celebrating at Reed’s convocation.

Before you arrive on campus, I want to share some tips on how to prepare for your time at Reed.

  • Reach out to your family physician this summer about your own personal health circumstances. Many students continue their relationships with their home state providers via telehealth, while others seek out providers in the Portland area for their unique needs.
  • Make sure your health insurance is comprehensive and active. Please also check with your provider about the specific coverage offered in the greater Portland area. The 2024–25 Reed College student health insurance plan will be with PacificSource
  • Make sure your emergency contact list is up to date in IRIS and that these are the people that you want informed about any situation that may affect your health, wellbeing, and safety.
  • Pack and plan with a health and wellbeing mindset. For example, you might consider transferring your prescriptions to a local pharmacy and putting together a small health and safety kit with over-the-counter items such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen, allergy meds, cough drops, tissues, bandaids, hand sanitizer, a thermometer, masks, and a flashlight.
  • Explore the resources on the Health and Counseling Center website. In particular, I want to draw attention to the fact that Reed’s counseling services include short-term, solution-focused counseling sessions, as well as up to 12 free teletherapy sessions each year through Uwill. Students who need long-term individual therapy services will be offered referrals to providers in the community.
I cannot wait to meet you as you become a part of our extraordinary community.

Be well,

Yasodha R. Gopal, MD
