Communications and Reminders from Reed

A Message from Reed's Sustainability Coordinator

Greetings, Student,

Here at Reed, we work (and play) hard to integrate sustainability into everything we do.

Accounting for the college’s overall resource consumption and carbon footprint is our responsibility as engaged citizens in an ever-changing world, so across campus you’ll find a multitude of sustainability initiatives launched by students, for students. One of the best ways to learn about what we do is to follow us on Instagram @sustainablereed.

Here are eight ways to get involved:

  • Browse our Swap Shop in the downstairs of Gray Campus Center, where you can find gently used clothing, accessories, books, and household items for free.
  • Join Greenboard events (@reed_greenboard), where you can meet with other sustainability-minded students and make change on campus.
  • Explore the Reed Garden. The garden is open to all students; come get dirty, build a connection to place, and take some veggies home.
  • Check out the Pollinator Garden in the Centennial Orchard, on the north side of the canyon. Come fall, we’ll be harvesting apples from the orchard for cider.
  • Help out with Canyon Day in April! We pull ivy and plant native plants. It’s a time for community members to gather around a core value—care for the land—while having fun together.
  • Bike around campus and then store your bike in one of Reed’s bike lockers or one of the secure storage rooms available in several residence halls.
  • Use the robust recycling center in the downstairs of Gray Campus Center to recycle plastic, batteries, packaging, and more.
  • Attend the kick-off party of our new sustainability and environmental justice living-learning community at the Garden House on September 20

I look forward to meeting you and welcoming you to Reed!

With care,

Rachel Willis
