Academic Planning

Welcome to Reed College academics!

This summer, registering for classes and preparing for your first semester at Reed will take place in two parts. It will be critical to complete all action items on time.

Below is a brief timeline of what you can expect for registration and advising:

Phase One: Advising Prep and Workshops

  • June 1: Submit your Academic Advising Form on IRIS.
    • The information you share in this form will be used to match you with faculty members who will serve as your registration coach who will help you register for classes in August and also your first-year academic adviser who will provide advising throughout the year. For some students the same faculty member will act as registration and as academic adviser.
  • June - August: Draft the courses you want to take in the schedule planner in preparation for your registration coach Zoom meeting. Review the information about the Reed liberal arts experience and the registration process as part of the online Orientation modules.

Phase Two: Course Advising and Selection

  • July 1: You will receive an email with the name of your registration coach and academic adviser, as well as instructions on how to sign up for a 30-minute Zoom meeting with your registration coach, which will take place in August.
  • July 15: Deadline to sign up for a time slot for a 30 - minute Zoom meeting with your registration coach.
  • Aug 4 -14: You will meet with your Registration coach for a 30 - minute Zoom meeting. Coaches will talk through your plans and prepare you to register for classes. During this meeting, you will receive the PIN that you need to access SOLAR, Reed’s online registration system.
  • Aug 18: The online registration system “SOLAR” opens for ‘dibs day’ at 9 am PT. You will be able to register for your first choice course for fall semester and for spring semester.
  • August 19: You will be able to register for the rest of your remaining fall and spring courses starting at 9 am PT.
  • August 26: You will receive a reminder about your first meeting with your Academic Adviser during on-campus Orientation. Your adviser may be different from your registration coach.
  • August 28: You will meet with your academic adviser and review your fall and spring courses, discuss long range planning, and receive additional advising.
  • Tuesday, September 2: Classes begin!

Explore our academic department pages to learn about the various programs of study at Reed. In particular, take some time to look through the Humanities 110 page, which will give you more information about this foundational course required of all first year students.
