“The Influence of Latin American Dance on Classical Music”

Chris Washburne, a prominent Caribbean music scholar, discusses traditional Latin dances including the habanera, son, contradanza, and tango. Washburne is associate professor of ethnomusicology and founding director of the Louis Armstrong Jazz Performance program at Columbia University. He is the author of Sounding Salsa: Performing Latin Music in New York (Temple University Press, 2008). The leader of the highly acclaimed jazz groups SYOTOS and NYDNK, Washburne has also performed and recorded with Tito Puente, Eddie Palmieri, Celia Cruz, Ray Barretto, Mark Anthony, Justin Timberlake, Celine Dion, Gloria Estefan, and the Duke Ellington Orchestra.

A Conversation with the Grammy-winning Imani Winds

Imani Winds—with members Valerie Coleman, flute; Toyin Spellman-Diaz, oboe; Mariam Adam, clarinet; Jeff Scott, French horn; and Monica Ellis, bassoon—discusses its musical tribute to iconic African American entertainer Josephine Baker. The conversation, moderated by Reed professor of music Mark Burford, also explores the wind quintet as a distinctive vehicle for both players and composers. Portraits of Josephine Baker will be performed as part of the evening’s concert program.
