Below are some frequently asked questions about the process for getting on a Gray Fund trip. Please ask us if you do not find the answer to your question.

How do I get a spot on a Gray Fund trip?

To get on a Gray Fund trip you must sign up for a lottery. Sign ups for cultural trips happen in the Student Center beginning a week prior to the posted lottery date. Sign ups for outdoor trips happen at the time posted in the Student Center. If you cannot make it at the time posted, you can e-mail Will Symms at Symmsw@reed.edu at least 2 hours before the lottery time.

How do I know when the lotteries are held?

Lottery deadline information is listed on the posters and the online schedule. Look for the lines that says "Lottery." Lottery deadlines vary each week, so be sure to double-check. You do not need to be present to win a lottery.

How do I know when the sign up period begins?

Gray Fund cultural trip sign ups will be available starting about a week before the lottery. Outdoor lotteries are live and begin collecting names about 15 minutes before the posted time.

Where are the sign ups?

Signup's for outdoor trips, cultural trips and a variety of other Gray Fund activities and events take place in the Student Activities office in the Student Center.

How many people can go on a trip?

Trip numbers vary depending on the type of trip, safety factors, and cost. Often, trips include 13 participants, one faculty or staff leader, and one driver.

Why are there lotteries?

We often have more people interested in our trips than we can accommodate. Lotteries seem to be the most fair way to distribute a limited number of spots.

Can faculty and staff members attend?

Yes! We encourage faculty and staff to take advantage of Gray Fund trips. Since this is such a great way to meet students, we hold two or three spots in each trip for faculty and staff members. If faculty or staff do not attend, we release these spots into the general lottery.

What if I forget about the lottery?

Trips that don't fill up at the lottery will be available for sign ups. To inquire about open spots, mail grayfund@reed.edu regarding cultural trips or GFrecreation@reed.edu regarding recreational trips.

What if I get a spot but can't go after all?

Email the appropriate office and let us know. Many students that are interested in the trip but were not admitted via lottery would love your spot. Contact us at least 24 hours ahead of time so we have a chance to email others.

What if I don't get on a trip but really want to go?

There are many trips that fill up but then have no-shows at the van. We will usually fill these spots on a first-come, first-served basis. An exception is any outdoor trip that requires a packing list.

Am I limited to a certain number of trips a year?

Usually not. The only exceptions are some of the more popular outdoor trips such as skiing.
