Physics Department Associate

1.  Position Summary

The physics department is looking for a qualified applicant to fill its Department Associate position.  The primary responsibility of this position is to support the freshman physics laboratory by:

  • Organizing and training the student lab teaching assistants (~8), and overseeing their work in the lab (as proctors, mentors and graders).
  • Developing and implementing, together with the instructor, new laboratory content.
  • Keeping the introductory physics laboratory manual up-to-date in terms of the available experiments.
  • Evaluating the scientific content and clarity of student work during longer open-ended projects (these can involve a significant written component).
  • Being available during laboratory times, and making sure that the lab itself is kept clean, safe, and ready for use each week.
  • Organizing and maintaining the laboratory equipment, and replacing broken equipment.

In addition to their work running and maintaining the laboratory, the department associate is also responsible for the development and maintenance of the physics department's demonstration library.  For more information on the position click here.

This is a full-time, exempt position, working 37.5 hours per week. Starting pay is $54,086 per year.  This position will start late May or early June, 2014.

Applicants should have a Masters Degree in physics or related field (Ph.D. is preferred), and experience in running and developing introductory physics labs.
