Applying for financial aid

To apply for financial assistance at Reed College, you must complete three separate application forms.

  • College Scholarship Service (CSS) PROFILE: The CSS PROFILE is required to determine your eligibility for institutional funding.  You do not need to file the CSS PROFILE if you only want to be considered for federal financial aid.  (Foreign nationals applying for financial aid must file the CSS PROFILE.) Register for the PROFILE application at http://student.collegeboard.org/profile. Once you have registered, you can begin the online application immediately. Submit the completed PROFILE application to the College Board by the indicated deadline. If you have questions regarding the PROFILE application process, send an email to help@cssprofile.org or call 305/829-9793.

If parents are divorced or separated, only the parent (and stepparent, if remarried) that the student lived with most in the past 12 months should complete the PROFILE. However, Reed expects both parents to assist in financing a student’s education; therefore, the student’s non-custodial parent must complete the Noncustodial PROFILE (NCP). The Noncustodial PROFILE is available at https://ncprofile.collegeboard.com.  The Noncustodial PROFILE is required to determine your eligibility for institutional funding; you do not need to file the Noncustodial PROFILE to be considered for federal financial aid.
  • Free Application for Federal Student Aid: The Fafsa is required to determine your eligibility for federal funding.  Federal funding includes the Pell Grant, SEOG, Perkins Loan, Federal Work Study, Direct Loan, and Direct PLUS Loan. Since most financial aid packages at Reed include some federal funding, you must also file the FAFSA to be considered for institutional funding.  (Foreign nationals applying for aid are not required to file the FAFSA). The FAFSA is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. A paper copy can be obtained by calling 800/4FEDAID. This form may not be filed before January 1, but must be filed by the indicated deadline.
On the PROFILE and FAFSA forms, you may list multiple institutions to which you want your financial assessment sent. Upon completion of their assessments, CSS and the Federal Student Aid processors will send their analyses to each of the listed colleges. Therefore, if your student will apply for financial assistance at Reed College, you must list Reed in the appropriate sections of the PROFILE and FAFSA forms.
