Lecture: Laurence Cotton, "Frederick Law Olmsted: Designing America"

Tuesday, 7 p.m., Vollum lecture hall

A writer, historian, and filmmaker who studied cultural anthropology and film at Hampshire College, Laurence Cotton served as principal researcher and consulting producer for Frederick Law Olmsted: Designing America, a co-production of WNED-TV, Buffalo/Toronto and Florentine Films/Hott Productions. Cotton has served as executive director of the World Affairs Council of Oregon and on committees that planned legacy projects for the Lewis & Clark Bicentennial. He has been a consultant to the Confluence Project and played a role in launching the restoration efforts for Vista House in the Columbia Gorge. He currently serves as trustee of the Oregon State Parks Foundation and as a historian on board small ship cruise vessels that ply the rivers and coastlines of North America. Following a screening of the film, which premiered nationwide on PBS in June 2014, Cotton will speak briefly on Frederick Law Olmsted’s life and career and the legacy of the Olmsted Brothers company’s landscape designs across America, including the urban parks, private estates, and college campuses of Oregon and the Pacific Northwest. Sponsored by the American Studies program and the dean of the faculty.
