Events at Reed

The Reed dance department presents a concert of choreography by Reed students and faculty, and special guests. This semester, the department hosted renowned performance artist and choreographer Ralph Lemon. Students from the intermediate and advanced contemporary dance classes presented independently choreographed solos and duets to Lemon for his feedback, and having further refined their work, will perform their work in this concert. Additionally, the Reed Dance Troupe, an entirely student-organized, extracurricular dance ensemble, will perform two of their choreographed dances. (Dance Troupe members met for several hours each week throughout the semester to bring together their creative vision for this event.) The concert also will feature two classical Balinese dance pieces performed by the students of Professor Minh Tran’s “Dances of Bali, Indonesia” class. Prof. Tran recently returned from a residency at the Cudamani Dance and Music Institute in Bali, and his first-hand experiences informed students’ approach to the highly technical movements of both traditional feminine and masculine forms of Balinese dance. The concert culminates in an ensemble piece featuring Professor Carla Mann’s innovative choreography set to Bach’s Double Violin Concerto. Tickets: $1–3, at the door.
