Tango For Musicians at Reed College presents Astillero, the cutting edge of Argentina’s contemporary tango vanguard. Since their founding in 2005, Astillero has revolutionized tango from within, creating highly original music that is urgent, aggressive, and bursting with rhythmic energy. They have since become one of the most important and influential tango groups active today, performing at the Buenos Aires Tango Festival, the Montreal Jazz Festival, London’s Barbican Centre, and many other prominent stages throughout the world. Making their West Coast debut, and only second ever U.S. appearance, Astillero will be capping off a weeklong artistic residency at Reed with a concert performance of music from their album Soundtrack Buenos Aires, featuring the backing of the Reed Orchestra conducted by Prof. David Schiff. Directed by Prof. Luker, Tango for Musicians at Reed College is the world’s premier tango music education event, and is scheduled to take place this year in June 21–28 on the Reed campus. Sponsored by the Reed College departments of music, Spanish, and political science; the Dean of the Faculty office; and the Office for Institutional Diversity. This event is also made possible with the generous support of Christine Green, John Clark and Elizabeth Barringer, and James Richardson Clark ’14.
