Model and Diagrams of the Ara Pacis
Model
This exquisite model of the entire Ara Pacis provides the most informative overall view of this complex monument. Unlike the orientation of the Ara Pacis itself, this model has been installed oriented in the altar's original direction; the public avenue front facing east and the ceremonial entrance front facing west.
Among the many contributions of the Rotary Club of South Rome to the restoraton of the Ara Pacis and its building are two small, informative models on display in the museum. This model was made by the Istituto Statale d'Arte Rome 2 (now Liceo Artistico Roma 2), directed by Prof. Antonio Celli. Photos reproduced here with appreciation. The other model is of the northern Campus Martius during the Augustan period and is also available on this website.
A pdf with excellent account of the step-by-step process by which this model was created, with illustrations, is available on the Liceo Statale d’Arte Roma 2 website.
