Greece: Athens, Poros, and Mycenae

October 14-24

With Professor Ellen Millender

We're heading back to Greece! We are so excited that Classics & Humanities professor Ellen Millender will be leading a group of Reed alumni and friends as we explore both Athens and the wonderful resources and history just off the Peloponese.

Ellen has offered these comments on the trip:

“As any Reed student who has taken Greek history with me, I am incredibly passionate about anything that has to do with ancient Greece -- its language, its history, its literature, its topography, and its monuments.  Thus far in my career, however, I have only had the opportunity to share this love for the classical Greek world in the classroom and never in Greece itself.  The idea of spending a significant amount of time in Greece with older "students" is just a thrilling prospect.

I particularly look forward to several walking tours around ancient Athens that will allow us to piece together the famous imperial city that witnessed the beginnings of democracy and the creation of a host of cultural forms, including tragedy and comedy. Another highlight is our trip to Mycenae, which will reveal a great deal about the realities of the Bronze Age Greek world and the heroes that later populated the eighth-century BCE Homeric epics. Throughout the trip, we will look closely at artifacts both on site and in museums, from the ostraka (potsherds that contributed to the ostracism of powerful figures) housed in the Kerameikos Museum in Athens to the building blocks of the Parthenon.  And along the way we will get a good taste of the modern Greek world built upon these remains -- especially the food!”
